Ethereum Institutional, an organization dedicated to supporting institutions utilizing the Ethereum blockchain, has welcomed South Korea's initiative to build infrastructure for tokenized assets. Matthew Dawson, co-founder of Ethereum Institutional, stated in an interview that the organization is prepared to assist Korean financial institutions as they develop their digital asset strategies and integrate tokenized securities into the formal capital market framework.
This endorsement follows South Korea's Financial Services Commission (FSC) unveiling a three-step roadmap to broaden the scope of tokenized security offerings (STOs) beyond fractional investments to include conventional securities like stocks, bonds, and funds. The initial phase, set to begin in February with new legislation, will focus on tokenizing money market funds and bonds for institutional use. Subsequent stages aim to encompass publicly offered securities and establish an on-chain payment infrastructure utilizing stablecoins.
Dawson highlighted that major U.S. institutions such as BlackRock, J.P. Morgan, and Fidelity already operate tokenized money market funds on the Ethereum network, indicating the ecosystem's readiness. He also noted the existence of a stablecoin payment system on Ethereum's layer-2 solution, GIWA, hosted by South Korean exchange Upbit.
Describing South Korea as a significant player in both finance and technology, Dawson emphasized the country's strong developer community and its capacity to foster both traditional financial institutions and fintech ventures. Ethereum Institutional intends to expand its presence in Asia, including South Korea, by hiring technical and business consulting staff to provide direct support to institutions. The organization's long-term goal is to solidify Ethereum's position as a neutral, global infrastructure for all users, aligning with South Korea's broader efforts to develop accessible AI services independent of U.S. and Chinese models.
