The Ethereum Foundation's Protocol Cluster has outlined a roadmap aiming to make the Layer 1 blockchain network quantum-resistant by the end of 2029. This ambitious goal involves securing the execution, consensus, and data layers against potential threats from quantum computing. The foundation's plan aligns with industry-wide post-quantum migration timelines set by major tech companies like Google, Cloudflare, and Microsoft.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has identified specific areas vulnerable to quantum attacks, including BLS signatures, KZG-based data availability, ECDSA signatures for EOAs, and application-layer proofs. The upcoming Hegota upgrade, targeted for late 2026, is seen as a critical step, not a quantum-resistant fork itself, but one that will determine the timely implementation of future post-quantum forks. Key proposals for Hegota include FOCIL (EIP-7805) on the consensus layer and Frame Transactions (EIP-8141) on the execution layer, the latter allowing transaction fees to be paid with ERC-20 tokens.
