The Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is seeking approval from its DAO to activate ENSv2, a new version of its naming protocol. The upgrade introduces a redesigned registry architecture with more flexible domain management. New .eth registrations would pause for several hours during the transition, while existing domain holders could renew their names without migrating.
The upgrade to ENSv2 could streamline domain management and permissions for .eth users, potentially increasing adoption and utility of the Ethereum naming system. The transition process, however, may cause temporary disruptions for new domain registrations.
The Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is moving towards activating its next-generation protocol, ENSv2, pending approval from its decentralized autonomous organization (DAO). ENS founder Nick Johnson has submitted a draft proposal outlining the upgrade, which aims to enhance domain management and permissions through a redesigned registry architecture.
If the proposal is approved by the DAO, new registrations for .eth domains would be temporarily halted for several hours during the transition period as records are synchronized. However, existing domain holders would not be required to migrate their names and could continue to renew them as usual. ENS Labs has also reserved existing .eth names for their current owners within the upgraded system, allowing for a voluntary migration process.
Following the activation, ENS Labs intends to transfer its remaining administrative control over the upgraded contracts to the DAO. The proposal must first advance through the DAO's governance process, which includes a seven-day voting period requiring at least 1% voter participation (1 million ENS votes) and majority approval. If passed, a minimum two-day timelock would precede the upgrade's execution. A specific voting date has not yet been announced.
