El-Erian quit 9-figure job after daughter listed events he missed

Mohamed El-Erian, former CEO and co-CIO of PIMCO, resigned from his position in January after a personal intervention from his daughter. She presented him with a list of 22 significant events, including her first day of school and soccer matches, that he had missed due to his demanding work schedule. El-Erian described this as a "wake-up call" that highlighted a severe work-life imbalance, which he felt was negatively impacting his relationship with her.

Initially, El-Erian felt defensive, having rationalized each missed event with work-related excuses like travel and urgent calls. However, he realized the greater importance of his family life. He noted that work-life imbalance is a prevalent challenge in America, particularly affecting children and lower-income families.

Following his departure from PIMCO, El-Erian opted for a portfolio of part-time jobs that require less travel and offer more flexibility. He now shares morning routines with his daughter, including preparing breakfast and driving her to school, and is more present for her after-school activities. He also mentioned planning a holiday with her. El-Erian acknowledged his fortunate position to structure his life this way and expressed hope that more companies will prioritize work-life balance, enabling others to make similar decisions.
