Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi declared that enduring peace and stability in the Middle East are impossible without the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. Speaking at the inauguration of Egypt's new Strategic Command Headquarters, dubbed the Octagon, el-Sisi asserted that normalization of relations with Israel is contingent upon Israel ending its occupation of Palestinian territories.
El-Sisi emphasized that a comprehensive and just peace, which includes ending occupation, injustice, and aggression while restoring rights and ensuring security for all, is the sole path to resolving decades of conflict. He proposed the creation of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with international law. Such a resolution, he suggested, would pave the way for increased stability, cooperation, and prosperity in the region.
Furthermore, the Egyptian president called for the complete implementation of the Gaza ceasefire agreement and the US-Iran framework deal aimed at ending the war. He urged concerted efforts to prevent any attempts to undermine these agreements and expressed gratitude to US President Donald Trump for his contributions to securing both deals. El-Sisi also highlighted Egypt's role in managing regional escalation.
The inauguration ceremony for the Octagon, described as the world's largest military headquarters, was attended by senior civilian and military officials, including Defence Minister Lieutenant General Ashraf Salem Zaher and Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Ahmed Khalifa. El-Sisi characterized the new headquarters as a significant advancement in Egypt's command and operational capabilities.
