Senator Elizabeth Warren, a prominent Democrat and the second-highest-ranking member of the Senate Banking Committee, has formally requested that the Government Accountability Office (GAO) investigate significant staffing reductions at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). In a letter addressed to the GAO, Congress' independent auditing and investigations arm, Warren stated that the CFTC's workforce has declined by approximately 25% since the beginning of the previous year. She expressed concern that these cuts could materially impact the agency's capacity to execute its legal mandate and enforce regulations. Warren pointed to recent media reports suggesting that industries regulated by the CFTC may have benefited from these staff reductions. The CFTC, meanwhile, has recently indicated expectations to expand its workforce and asserted that it possesses sufficient resources to meet its obligations, partly through the utilization of artificial intelligence. The GAO and CFTC did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
