Crypto liquidations reached $1.05 billion over 24 hours, data provider CoinGlass showed, with long positions accounting for $930.04 million, or 88.2%, against $124.69 million in shorts. Bitcoin was quoted near $75,570 on November 6 after touching $74,780.91, its lowest intraday price since August 21, 77 days earlier.
Bitcoin accounted for $267.20 million of the liquidations, 88.9% of it long, and Ethereum for $167.14 million, 81.1% long. A liquidation is when an exchange automatically closes a leveraged position because its collateral is no longer sufficient, which can add selling pressure to a decline.
The retreat followed a selloff in US technology stocks on Thursday, November 5. The Nasdaq Composite fell 5.52%, its worst session in 19 months, the Philadelphia semiconductor index fell more than 12% and Nvidia lost over 9%, while the S&P 500 lost 4.36%. The report linked the equity move to Democratic victories in Tuesday's midterm elections and to expectations of tougher AI regulation, and said simultaneous moves in stocks and tokens do not necessarily mean the equity rout alone caused Bitcoin's decline.
The report also cited a stronger-than-expected US October jobs report that increased expectations of another Federal Reserve rate hike in December. The Fear and Greed Index stood at 28 out of 100, a level the report described as approaching extreme fear, against a neutral reading a week earlier.
On the charts, the report said Bitcoin traded below its 50-day exponential moving average near $79,756 and its 200-day EMA around $76,497, though the 50-day remained above the 200-day. The Relative Strength Index read 37.7 and the Average Directional Index 19.7, with the negative directional indicator above the positive one.
