Jessica Edgerton, CEO of the Council of Multiple Listing Services (CMLS), urged the real estate industry to embrace change and break down internal silos during the CMLS Open House 2026 conference. She emphasized the need for vigorous debate and a more amplified voice at federal and state levels.
Edgerton invoked management theorist Peter Drucker, stating that disagreement is necessary to stimulate imagination and creativity, and encouraged attendees not to fear making mistakes or deviating from lockstep.
During a sit-down interview, Edgerton described her leadership style as servant leadership, grounded in her love for people. She also outlined a newly created advocacy position at CMLS, explaining that the organization intends to collaborate with the National Association of Realtors (NAR) on federal matters while independently pursuing state-level initiatives. Edgerton noted that many lawmakers lack a basic understanding of MLS operations, necessitating a stronger, more unified voice.
To foster broader industry participation, CMLS has introduced a new broker membership tier, with eXp Realty and HomeServices of America already joining. Edgerton criticized the real estate industry's tendency to operate in silos, calling it unhealthy and stating CMLS's commitment to breaking them down.
Looking ahead, CMLS plans to host four regional in-person events next year, building towards a larger open house in Dallas in 2027. Edgerton concluded by encouraging attendees to get involved, share ideas, and contact her directly.
