Chinese startup StepFun launched the STEPX Neo phone on October 13, featuring its proprietary Step AOS 1.0 operating system with an integrated AI agent named Amoo. Priced at 3,999 yuan (about $560), the device includes 12 months of AI access, offering 100 billion tokens per month. Unlike traditional smartphones where AI is an add-on app, StepFun's system is built from the ground up for autonomous task execution, with features like long-term memory and task scheduling embedded in the OS.
The STEPX Neo offers users both a familiar app grid and a dedicated space for the Amoo agent. Simple commands can be processed by a small, offline model on the phone, while complex requests utilize a larger cloud-based model. A secondary MiniLED screen on the back displays the agent's activity. StepFun, founded in 2023 by former Microsoft VP Jiang Daxin, develops its own large language models, including Step 5 Preview with 600 billion parameters.
