Burnham urges business leaders to offer work shadowing to young people

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has issued a plea to business leaders across Britain to offer work shadowing opportunities to young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, as a means to combat rising youth unemployment.

Speaking on the Jimmy’s Jobs of the Future podcast, Burnham stressed the need for increased work experience and apprenticeships for individuals lacking prior connections in the professional world. He specifically called on those in senior positions to open their doors, stating, “Just let a young person, particularly from a background that might not be connected to yours, just come in and just be in the room.” Burnham believes that such exposure can help young people overcome imposter syndrome and build confidence.

Burnham also indicated plans to reform how government contracts are awarded, with a greater emphasis on social value. This initiative is part of a broader government effort to stimulate economic growth and reduce the welfare bill by integrating more young people into the workforce.

The call comes amid concerning statistics, with the number of young people not in education, employment, or training (NEET) exceeding one million in the first three months of 2026. A previous government-commissioned report by former health secretary Alan Milburn had warned that this figure could escalate to 1.25 million within five years, potentially costing the UK economy up to £125 billion annually.

Last week, Burnham announced a significant overhaul of the UK's education system, aiming to better prepare young individuals for employment. Key changes include giving greater prominence to vocational training in the curriculum and enabling secondary schools to tailor courses from year 10 onwards to align with local industry needs.
