At the ET Alpha Wealth Summit, BSE MD and CEO Sundararaman Ramamurthy detailed the significant transformation of India's capital markets, moving from an era of unpredictable settlements to a system built on trust and robust infrastructure. He highlighted the growth in investor numbers, with approximately 11 crore unique PANs and 25 crore UCC accounts, and 3.5 crore active participants.
Ramamurthy emphasized BSE's strategic focus on empowering small and medium enterprises (SMEs) through dedicated listing platforms, viewing it as a structural priority. He also discussed the critical role of guaranteed, time-bound settlements and client-level fund segregation in fostering public trust.
Beyond infrastructure, BSE actively engages in investor education, with Ramamurthy personally visiting colleges to instill an investment culture among Gen-Z. The core message, 'Trade what you understand. Understand what you trade,' is central to these outreach efforts. Special attention is given to increasing participation from women investors, recognized for bringing stability to markets, and young investors, who are more digitally active but also more vulnerable to online fraud.
Combating cybercrime, including deepfake videos used for financial advice, is a key component of BSE's outreach to younger demographics. The exchange conducts sessions on various forms of fraud and collaborates with police cybercrime cells to educate both investors and law enforcement.
