BMW has updated its i7 electric sedan for model-year 2027, raising net battery capacity to 112.5 kWh from 101.7 kWh while keeping a 400 V architecture, according to a first-drive account published on November 5, 2026. The midrange 60 xDrive version produces a combined 544 hp (400 kW) and 549 lb-ft (745 Nm), roughly equivalent to the car before the update. A less powerful 50 xDrive and a more powerful M70 xDrive will also be available.
BMW quotes 344 to 362 miles of range depending on wheel size. DC fast-charging tops out at 250 kW, up from 195 kW, and a 10 to 80 percent charge takes about 28 minutes. The car has a NACS charging port, as do other model-year 2027 BMW EVs.
The updated i7 carries BMW's sixth-generation electric powertrain, which the automaker designed for its Neue Klasse family. It uses cylindrical battery cells instead of prismatic ones, silicon carbide inverters and more compact drive-unit packaging. The powertrain's domain controller works with route-planning software that runs AI simulations of the battery based on previous charging cycles and factors in the cost per kWh at different charging stations.
Inside, BMW replaced the previous infotainment system with a Panoramic iDrive display running along the base of the windshield and a trapezoidal touchscreen. A new domain controller lets the front passenger screen and the roof-mounted rear theater screen operate independently of each other and of the main screen. The 31.3-inch rear screen has 8K resolution, though its aspect ratio leaves black bars on either side when showing video.
The first-drive account reported noticeable lag on the main infotainment system and said the i7 accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds with launch control. It described the car's ride as more relaxed than a Porsche Taycan's.
