Bitcoin options worth $15.6 billion expire Friday

Approximately 182,000 Bitcoin options contracts, representing a notional value of about $15.6 billion, are set to expire on the Deribit exchange on Friday, September 25. This expiration event involves 106,200 call options and 75,900 put options. A call option gives the buyer the right to purchase Bitcoin at a specified price by a certain date, while a put option grants the right to sell. Traders typically buy calls when anticipating a price increase and puts when expecting a decrease. The "max pain" price, a theoretical level where the largest number of contracts would expire worthless, is set at $76,000. This figure, however, has a mixed record as a predictor of Bitcoin's actual price movement. The most heavily concentrated strike price on the board is $70,000, with significant call and put positions at this level, potentially creating hedging pressure from both directions. Market makers who sold these options often hedge their exposure by buying or selling actual Bitcoin as prices fluctuate. The disappearance of this hedging flow after expiration can influence market dynamics. In addition to the options expiry, traders will be monitoring US durable goods orders and the University of Michigan's final September consumer sentiment reading, both due within hours of the Deribit settlement. CME's September Bitcoin futures also expire on the same day, adding further potential volatility.
