Absa Corporate and Investment Banking (CIB) has launched its Absa Digital Asset Custody platform, marking a significant development for institutional digital asset services in Africa. The platform, which went live on September 21, 2026, utilizes Ripple's custody technology to offer secure storage and management of digital assets for corporate clients.
The partnership between Absa and Ripple, first reported in October 2025, has now materialized into a named product. Absa Digital Asset Custody provides key features such as private-key management, transaction and approval controls, and robust governance and compliance frameworks, aiming to meet the security standards clients already expect for traditional assets. Absa is positioning the service as a secure vault rather than a trading venue.
Ripple supplies the core custody software and blockchain broadcast capabilities, while Absa integrates these with its banking infrastructure and regulatory oversight. Reece Merrick, Ripple's Managing Director for the Middle East and Africa, described the launch as a "major milestone" for bank-grade digital asset infrastructure on the continent, setting a "new benchmark for secure, compliant, and bank-grade digital asset management."
The launch occurs amidst a global trend of major banks entering the crypto custody space, with Deutsche Bank also announcing similar plans in the same week. This move by Absa is part of Ripple's broader strategy to build out digital asset infrastructure in Africa, following previous initiatives in payments and stablecoin rails.
