Sweden's military reported on Saturday that its fighter jets were scrambled on Friday to intercept two separate Russian military aircraft flying in the Baltic Sea region near Swedish borders. The Russian Su-24 and Su-34 jets did not enter Swedish airspace.
Vice Admiral Ewa Skoog Haslum, chief of the armed forces operations command, stated that Russia's actions are serious and represent a recurring behavior that threatens Sweden's territorial integrity and security. She added that Swedish and allied fighter aircraft responded quickly and resolutely to secure Sweden's and the alliance's territory.
Since joining NATO in 2024, Sweden has reportedly become a significant target for Russian provocations. This follows a pattern of military incidents in the Baltic Sea region since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, including unauthorized drones and encounters with Russian submarines near its maritime borders.
On the same day as the interceptions, the Swedish government issued a defense report highlighting a perceived risk of deepening confrontation between Russia and Europe.
