At least eight people, including two children, were injured in Russian strikes targeting the southeastern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia on Sunday morning, June 28, 2026. Governor Ivan Fedorov reported that a 5-year-old boy was in serious condition as a result of the attack, which also caused damage and fires to residential buildings.
Fedorov stated that the strikes occurred on a Sunday morning, hitting the regional center. He had previously warned of guided aerial bomb threats and incoming high-speed missiles targeting Zaporizhzhia Oblast and the city. Photos and videos released by the governor showed heavily damaged residential buildings, with emergency crews working to evacuate residents and rescue pets.
Zaporizhzhia, a significant industrial city, has become a front-line location during Russia's invasion, situated approximately 20 kilometers from the battlefield. Its proximity makes it a frequent target for Russian attacks, which can be carried out with a wide range of weaponry. The drone threat persisted until the air raid alert was lifted in the early afternoon.
The morning strikes followed a broader overnight Russian missile and drone offensive across Ukraine, which resulted in 36 injuries nationwide. As of 2022, Zaporizhzhia had a population of around 710,000. While the city itself remains under Ukrainian control, Russian forces occupy approximately 70% of the surrounding Zaporizhzhia Oblast.
