Drones sighted over German military base days after airport incident

Two drones were detected over a military base in Mechernich, western Germany, on August 7, according to a Bundeswehr official. This sighting occurred just two days after a significant security incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport, where unknown drones disrupted operations.

During the August 5 incident at Leipzig, one drone was discovered near a Ukrainian Antonov Airlines An-124 transport aircraft, and another collided with an incoming DHL cargo plane. The collision caused minor damage and led to a temporary suspension of flights. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described the Leipzig airport incident as "very serious" and did not rule out the possibility of "foreign powers" being involved, suggesting it could be a "hybrid attack."

The drone found near the Ukrainian aircraft was described as a "modified drone" carrying a detonator and an "unknown substance." The breach at Leipzig prompted a meeting of Germany's National Security Council. The increase in drone sightings has heightened concerns about Russia's military capabilities in Europe and NATO, with German Army Chief Christian Freuding having previously warned that Russia might be prepared to strike NATO countries within three years.
