A Russian strike on the Ukrainian city of Odesa on Aug. 7 damaged one of the country's largest football stadiums, Chornomorets Stadium, and injured at least one person. The attack occurred around 3:30 p.m. local time, shortly after Ukraine's Air Force had warned of approaching drones.
Governor Oleh Kiper reported that a 29-year-old woman was injured at the stadium and received medical attention. The venue, located near the city's port, sustained significant damage, including a partially destroyed roof, damaged glazing, and spectator stands.
Chornomorets Stadium has a capacity of 34,164 spectators and has previously hosted UEFA competition matches and international fixtures for Ukraine's national team. It is currently home to both the men's FC Chornomorets and the women's SeaSters football club, hosting top-flight league matches. The next Ukrainian Premier League men's match was scheduled for Aug. 8, with organizers yet to announce any changes.
According to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, as of July 20, Russian forces had damaged or destroyed 915 sports infrastructure facilities across Ukraine. Russian forces have increased attacks on Odesa and the surrounding region during the summer tourist season, targeting port infrastructure, civilian vessels, and causing casualties among crew members.
