Johan Eliasch, the incumbent president of the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS), is facing a re-election vote amidst significant opposition from established ski nations and prominent athletes. Eliasch, who also leads the Head sportswear brand, has been criticized for his management style, which critics describe as autocratic and lacking transparency, potentially jeopardizing FIS's financial stability.
Concerns have been raised by officials from the U.S., Canada, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, and Norway, who noted a substantial decline in cash reserves and significant increases in annual operating costs, with revenues not meeting expectations. Eliasch, a dual citizen of Sweden and Britain, secured nomination from Georgia to comply with FIS rules, as neither of his home federations supported his re-election bid.
Athletes, including Mikaela Shiffrin and Marco Odermatt, have expressed dissatisfaction, with Shiffrin stating that FIS's contribution to prize money appears set to decrease. Eliasch, however, believes the athletes' sentiments are not reflective of the general mood. His opponent, Alexander Ospelt, a lawyer from Liechtenstein, is campaigning on a platform of financial transparency and increased athlete involvement, aiming to foster a more inclusive and globally competitive sport.
