Spencer Horwitz was hit by a pitch from Anthony Bender with the bases loaded in the eighth inning, bringing in the go-ahead run and securing a 3-2 victory for the Pittsburgh Pirates over the Miami Marlins on Saturday. The loss snapped the Marlins' six-game winning streak.
Bender (1-1) had struck out the first two batters of the inning before allowing singles to Tyler Callihan and Jake Mangum, followed by a walk to Jared Triolo. On the first pitch after a mound visit, Bender's 97 mph sinker struck Horwitz, allowing Callihan to score.
The Marlins had threatened in the eighth, with Otto Lopez singling and Xavier Edwards walking, but Yohan Ramírez (4-2) struck out the next three batters to end the threat. Gregory Soto then closed out the ninth for his 10th save, despite giving up a leadoff single to Esteury Ruiz.
Earlier, Ryan O’Hearn put Pittsburgh ahead in the first inning with a single. Liam Hicks tied the game for Miami in the third with a line-drive single, but Bryan Reynolds responded with an RBI double to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead.
In the sixth, Heriberto Hernández tied the game at 2-2 with a single after Mason Montgomery relieved starter Bubba Chandler, who allowed two runs on three hits with six strikeouts and one walk in 5 2/3 innings. Reynolds also made a leaping catch in the eighth to rob Hernández of a potential game-tying home run.
