Ken Morrow, the sole American to achieve the rare feat of winning an Olympic gold medal and the Stanley Cup in the same year, is watching history potentially repeat itself. Following the U.S. men's hockey team's Olympic gold medal victory in February, Jack Eichel and Noah Hanifin of the Vegas Golden Knights, and Jaccob Slavin of the Carolina Hurricanes, are now competing in the Stanley Cup Final.
If the Hurricanes win, Slavin would join Morrow in the exclusive club. This outcome would also represent a measure of retribution for teammate Seth Jarvis, who played for Canada in the Olympic final and lost to the U.S. in overtime.
Eichel, who won the Stanley Cup with the Golden Knights in 2023, acknowledged similarities in the mentality and investment required for both the Olympics and the Stanley Cup playoffs, despite the difference in duration and format. Hanifin noted that the seven-game series format of the NHL playoffs allows for more adaptation and learning compared to the single-elimination nature of the Olympics.
Morrow, who achieved his double in 1980 with the "Miracle on Ice" team and the New York Islanders, reflected on the changed landscape since the NHL began sending professionals to the Olympics. He noted that today's players, unlike himself at age 23, do not face the immediate pressure of earning a living or securing an NHL job after Olympic success.
