China LNG Imports Rise on Summer Demand, Despite Supply Concerns

China's liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports are projected to hold steady year-on-year in June, with an estimated 5.29 million tons expected. This figure represents an increase compared to May's imports. The rise is primarily fueled by escalating summer power demand, largely driven by the need for air conditioning. This increased demand occurs concurrently with a weakening in China's domestic natural gas production.

In parallel, a severe heatwave gripping Europe has significantly boosted demand for Chinese-manufactured portable air conditioners. Exports of these units to Western Europe have seen a substantial increase, rising by more than 70% during the first five months of 2026 compared to the same period in the previous year. Consumers across Europe are actively seeking available stock to cope with the record-breaking temperatures.
