Honda CEO apologizes for company's loss, wins investor backing

Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe has apologized to shareholders for the company's first annual net loss in seven decades, a financial downturn that reached $2.7 billion. Despite this significant loss, Mibe secured support for his reappointment to the board.

The substantial net loss is largely attributed to restructuring costs incurred as Honda reorients its business toward electric vehicles (EVs). In a significant strategic shift, Honda is abandoning its ambitious 2040 goal of exclusively selling electric and fuel-cell vehicles. This decision stems from what the company cites as unrealistic projections and evolving customer demand in the automotive market.

Instead of a full EV transition by 2040, Honda plans to concentrate on introducing 15 new hybrid models by the year 2030. This pivot is supported by a significant investment allocated to developing and enhancing its hybrid powertrain technologies. The company's revised strategy reflects a more cautious approach to electrification, acknowledging current market realities and consumer preferences for hybrid options.
