Rivian is placing significant emphasis on its new R2 midsize SUV, viewing it as a pivotal product that could determine the company's long-term success and profitability. The R2, which launched to customers on June 9, is positioned to compete in the highly popular midsize SUV segment, with a starting price of $44,990 and an estimated range of around 300 miles across its trims.
Early deliveries of the R2 Performance models, priced at $57,990 and including a Launch Package, have already begun, with several vehicles spotted on U.S. roads. These initial models are available in six exterior colors: Esker Silver, Glacier White, Midnight, Catalina Cove, Half-Moon Grey, and Launch Green, along with 20- and 21-inch wheel options. The interior is currently offered only in Black Crater. Customers have reported monthly lease prices ranging from $829 to over $1,000, with delivery estimates varying from three to 12 weeks.
The launch roadmap indicates a phased introduction of further options. New exterior colors, Forest Green and Coastal Cloud Signature interior, are expected in August 2026, followed by a purple Borealis exterior paint in September 2026. New trims and powertrain configurations will follow, with the $53,990 Premium trim anticipated in late 2026, and initial Standard trim options arriving in spring 2027. Drivetrain configurations, including rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive Long Range versions, are scheduled for spring 2027. The most affordable, $44,990 rear-wheel-drive Standard trim is expected in summer 2027. Additionally, Rivian plans to offer a lidar configuration in late 2026 to support its self-driving technology ambitions.
Analysts have drawn parallels between the R2's launch and Tesla's introduction of the Model 3, suggesting the R2 could be instrumental in revitalizing EV sales and helping Rivian achieve sustained profitability. CEO RJ Scaringe has acknowledged the critical role of the R2 in scaling the business.
