Fairway Home Mortgage launches nonprofit to combat senior financial fraud

Fairway SAFE plans to offer free programming, resources, and collaborations targeted at senior homeowners, caregivers, and financial professionals. This launch occurs amidst a rise in elder financial exploitation, with regulators issuing warnings about increasing social engineering, impersonation, investment scams, and romance scams targeting seniors.

Janet Koopman, president of Fairway SAFE, stated that the mission is to equip seniors and their families with the knowledge to recognize threats, ask questions confidently, and make informed financial decisions, thereby protecting their confidence, independence, and peace of mind.

To commemorate the launch, Fairway will host a complimentary national webinar titled “Stay Safe: Protecting Yourself from Scams & Financial Abuse” on July 29. The one-hour session will feature attorney and fraud prevention expert Steven J. J. Weisman, offering practical steps for attendees to safeguard themselves and their loved ones.

The webinar, open to seniors, caregivers, and financial professionals, will cover the scope of financial scams, common scammer tactics, vulnerable populations, emerging fraud trends, and protective measures for personal finances.

Weisman emphasized that education is a key tool in combating financial fraud, noting that recognizing warning signs can significantly help potential victims.
