Echigo Tokimeki Railway, based in Niigata Prefecture, is intensifying its marketing efforts to attract international tourists, particularly from Southeast Asia, to its Setsugekka resort train. The train operates between Itoigawa and Joetsumyoko stations, offering passengers a three-hour scenic journey with gourmet dining experiences.
The Setsugekka train is designed with the concept of "all made in Niigata," utilizing local materials for its interior and cuisine. Passengers can enjoy panoramic views of the Japan Sea and Mt. Myoko through exceptionally large windows. Morning services feature French cuisine, while afternoon services provide Japanese cuisine, with both meals prepared using seasonal local ingredients. The train's design has also received accolades, including a Commendation Award at the Brunel Awards 2025.
To reach the starting point, Joetsu-Myoko Station, travelers can take the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo (approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes) or an express train from Niigata Station (around 2 hours). The fare for the Setsugekka journey, which includes the meal, is 24,800 yen and also grants unlimited rides on local Echigo Tokimeki Railway trains for the day.
