Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw anticipates a significant increase in memory chip production in India, driven by global supply shortages and rising demand, particularly for AI data centers. He stated in an interview that both new companies are expected to invest and existing manufacturers will scale up their operations.
Vaishnaw highlighted that the semiconductor industry's rapid growth has led to a substantial shortage of components like high bandwidth memory chips, crucial for AI data centers. He noted that Micron has already commenced commercial production at two plants in India, with more expected to follow. The minister indicated that the government's Semicon Mission 2.0 will prioritize chip design and the manufacturing of semiconductor equipment within India.
Beyond chip manufacturing, India is also focusing on indigenous production of complex chemicals and gases essential for chip fabrication. The country is also experiencing a surge in data center investments, projected to surpass $200 billion. Vaishnaw attributed this growth to India's strong talent pool, a significantly upgraded national grid, and a substantial capacity for renewable energy generation.
Addressing environmental concerns, Vaishnaw mentioned that India adheres to stringent norms and is adopting innovative technologies, such as water cooling methods that can reduce water requirements by approximately 70%. Despite these efforts, data center water consumption in India is projected to rise significantly in the coming years.
