Hong Kong may play a significant role in China's evolving approach to global governance, according to analysts. Following the release of a white paper by China's State Council titled 'More Just and Equitable Global Governance: China’s Principles, Proposals and Actions,' experts suggest the city could become a hub for international organizations and a leader in setting global standards.
The white paper, which expands on China's Global Governance Initiative launched last September, posits that global governance is at a "critical crossroads" due to various crises disrupting the post-World War II international system. China indicated support for changes that align with current realities rather than rebuilding or replacing existing structures.
China's top diplomat, Wang Yi, emphasized the need to "reinvigorate multilateralism, uphold rules and the rule of law and improve the effectiveness of governance." Kenneth Wong, director of the University of Hong Kong’s school of governance and policy, noted the paper's release at a time when reinforcing rules-based institutions is crucial.
