US AI export ban on Anthropic models boosts Chinese alternatives

A directive from the US Commerce Department this month mandates that all foreigners, including employees of US companies working abroad, be denied access to Anthropic's most advanced models, such as Fable 5 and Mythos 5. Anthropic was reportedly given only 90 minutes to implement this shutdown, with national security concerns cited as the reason.

This development poses a potential challenge to Hong Kong's ambition to revive its standing as an international financial center, as advanced AI models are rapidly being adopted globally, particularly for coding purposes. The Financial Times warned that preventing access to these leading AI tools could hinder the city's competitiveness.

However, the situation may inadvertently benefit China's AI industry. If international users are unable to access the most advanced US AI models, they may turn to more affordable and "good enough" alternatives developed by Chinese firms.
