Ford Rehires Veteran Engineers as AI Quality Systems Fall Short

Kumar Galhotra, Ford's chief operating officer, explained that the company had increasingly relied on automated quality systems with disappointing outcomes. Consequently, Ford decided to re-employ technical specialists to identify potential failure points in parts before they reach the assembly line.

Charles Poon, Ford's vice president of vehicle hardware engineering, acknowledged a mistaken belief that simply introducing AI and inputting design requirements would automatically result in a high-quality product. He clarified that this move does not signify an abandonment of Ford's AI initiatives but rather a strategic integration where the rehired "gray beard" engineers will mentor younger employees and assist in reprogramming AI tools.

This strategic rehiring is projected to yield significant financial benefits, with Ford anticipating a $1 billion reduction in costs this year. Furthermore, the automaker has reportedly secured the leading position among mainstream brands in the recently released JD Power Initial Quality Survey.
