China’s surgical robot gains EU market access, AI model tops benchmark

Shanghai MicroPort MedBot's Toumai Remote robot has achieved a significant milestone by obtaining the CE mark, granting it access to the European Union market. This teleoperated surgical system enables surgeons to perform laparoscopic procedures remotely, integrating 5G technology for applications in urology, general surgery, thoracic surgery, and gynaecology.

The company stated it is the first remote surgical robot to receive this EU certification. The CE mark signifies that the product meets EU safety, health, and environmental protection requirements, allowing it to be marketed freely within the EU.

Prior to this approval, the Toumai system was utilized in the UK for the country's first robotic telesurgery. In March, a surgeon in London reportedly used the robot to perform a prostate removal on a patient in Gibraltar, approximately 2,400 kilometers away.

According to a WeChat post from Shanghai-based MedBot, the company has already delivered over 300 Toumai units to more than 60 markets worldwide.
