Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy offered to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Group of 7 summit this week for talks to end the war, but stated that the Russian leader was not ready for dialogue. Zelenskiy conveyed this proposal, which he said had the agreement of Europe and the United States.
Separately, U.S. President Donald Trump spoke with both Putin and Zelenskiy on Sunday, the day of Trump's 80th birthday. Trump told Putin that ending the Ukraine conflict is vital and that he is ready to help, according to Kremlin adviser Yury Ushakov. Trump also conveyed that an agreement on ending the conflict with Iran was nearing completion, and that a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz was done. Putin sent birthday greetings to Trump, calling him 'bright, remarkable' and suggesting improved U.S.-Russia ties. The two leaders also discussed an upcoming visit of U.S. envoys to Russia regarding the Iran agreement.
Zelenskiy also spoke with Trump about the war, diplomacy, and peace negotiations, conveying birthday greetings. Zelenskiy briefed Trump on Ukraine's strengthened battlefield position against Russia, and the leaders agreed to speak further at the G7 summit on how to advance peace and protect lives.
