Zali Steggall poised to launch new political venture

Steggall recently briefed teal MPs and prominent members of the independent movement on the case for banding together, presenting polling data and outlining the advantages of operating within a party structure. These discussions were reportedly spurred by recent electoral law changes that disadvantaged independents and the growing influence of parties like One Nation.

However, the prospect of a unified 'teal party' has divided some crossbenchers. While Steggall's Sydney-based colleagues Allegra Spender, Sophie Scamps, and Nicolette Boele are reportedly open to the idea without public commitment, MPs like Monique Ryan and Kate Chaney have expressed firm opposition. Ryan stated her intention to remain an independent, citing voter dissatisfaction with traditional parties, while Boele indicated a willingness to discuss policy goals with her constituents.

Independent MP Andrew Wilkie also confirmed he would not join such a party, though he expressed hope for its success in empowering the crossbench. Opposition leader Angus Taylor, meanwhile, dismissed the initiative, suggesting the teal MPs already operate as a de facto party. Steggall herself has previously written about the need for Australian politics to evolve, suggesting a new model that is more responsive and accountable to voters.
