A court in West Bengal's Paschim Medinipur district has issued an arrest warrant for Sumit Roy, a close associate of Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee, in connection with a land scam case. The warrant was issued after investigators informed the court that Roy could not be traced despite repeated attempts to locate him.
Police stated that several teams had been trying to find Roy for several days. As he could not be located and was not cooperating with the investigation, the police sought an arrest warrant, which the court granted. Roy's name reportedly surfaced during the interrogation of Sujoy Hazra, a former Medinipur MLA who was previously arrested in the same land scam case.
As part of the search, police teams, accompanied by central forces, visited Banerjee's Kalighat residence and Roy's in-laws' residence in Serampore, Hooghly district, but did not find him. Roy approached the Calcutta High Court on Monday seeking anticipatory bail, with his counsel mentioning the matter before Justice Joy Sengupta's bench. The plea is expected to be heard later this week.
