President Trump on Saturday morning criticized opponents of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the U.S. and Iran, labeling them "fools" and accusing former President Obama of being a "weak and ineffective leader" who empowered Tehran through financial concessions during his time in office. Trump asserted that Iran had "ZERO respect" for Obama and President Biden, believing them to be weak leaders.
Obama, in an interview that aired Friday, defended the nuclear agreement negotiated during his presidency, stating that the U.S. might be "worse off" than before the Iran war began. He argued that Trump's decision to withdraw from the nuclear deal led Iran to develop more nuclear capacity.
Several Republican lawmakers also voiced skepticism regarding the 60-day ceasefire MOU, citing concerns over its cost, the lifting of oil sanctions on Iran, and the potential for Iran to access a $300 billion reconstruction fund. Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) stated that giving billions to Iran was not a good idea and suggested the president was receiving poor advice.
