President Trump congratulated Senator Lindsey Graham on his primary election victory in South Carolina, urging the senator to focus on passing the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act. Graham, a key ally of Trump, is projected to win his Republican primary with 56.79% of the vote, avoiding a runoff.
Graham is now set to face Democratic pediatrician Annie Andrews in the November general election. The SAVE America Act, which requires proof of citizenship for voter registration and photo ID for casting a ballot, has garnered support from Graham, who stated in April that it was "time to restore trust in our democratic process."
Earlier, Trump had publicly called on Senate Majority Leader John Thune to remove Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough to clear a path for Senate Republicans to pass the SAVE America Act. Graham, a former critic of Trump who later became a loyal supporter, had faced criticism from some on the right earlier this year for advocating for increased military pressure on Iran.
