Three individuals from South Wales have been arrested after a record-breaking seizure of 12 tonnes of cannabis, with an estimated street value of £139 million. The cannabis was imported from Canada and was recovered from shipping containers on May 6, in transit to a port on the south coast of England.
The investigation was initiated when the Canada Border Services Agency intercepted a shipment destined for the UK. Subsequently, the South West Regional Organised Crime Unit (SWROCU) identified two containers containing the cannabis, which was packed in 1,200 boxes. Warrants were executed at the suspects' homes on June 16, leading to their arrest on suspicion of facilitating the importations. The three suspects, two men and one woman aged in their 30s and 40s, are from Merthyr Tydfil, Ebbw Vale, and Abertillery, and are currently in police custody.
UK government minister Mike Tapp MP described the seizure as "record-breaking" and a "vile trade." This incident highlights the ongoing challenges in combating international drug trafficking and its significant impact on communities.
