South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has filed an urgent court application to prevent a parliamentary impeachment process from commencing over allegations linked to his 'Farmgate' scandal. The president is seeking a high court ruling on a separate application he previously made to have an independent panel's misconduct findings concerning the scandal overturned.
The 'Farmgate' scandal centers on the theft of $580,000 in cash from a sofa on Ramaphosa's farm in 2020. While Ramaphosa stated the money was from buffalo sales and denied wrongdoing, the incident raised questions about undeclared funds and their storage. The scandal has been a significant embarrassment for Ramaphosa, who came to power on an anti-corruption platform.
Last month, South Africa's constitutional court revived impeachment proceedings against Ramaphosa, invalidating a 2022 parliamentary vote that had halted the process. The high court is scheduled to hear Ramaphosa's challenge to the misconduct findings between September 2 and 4. Despite the ongoing legal and political challenges, analysts anticipate Ramaphosa would likely survive an impeachment vote in parliament.
