Zohran Mamdani's influence within the Democratic party was highlighted as three congressional candidates he endorsed secured victories in closely watched New York City primaries. Darializa Avila Chevalier, a public defense investigator, achieved a significant upset by defeating five-term incumbent Adriano Espaillat in the 13th congressional district. Chevalier, 32, focused her campaign on working-class issues.
In other races, Brad Lander, a former New York City comptroller, comfortably won his contest against Representative Dan Goldman. Claire Valdez, a state lawmaker and former union organizer, defeated Antonio Reynoso in New York's seventh district, a seat currently held by the retiring Nydia Velázquez. Reynoso had received endorsements from Velázquez and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
Jack Schlossberg, grandson of John F. Kennedy, did not succeed in his bid for the House of Representatives, despite significant social media presence and charismatic campaigning. Micah Lasher won the primary in New York's 12th district. On Long Island, Democratic freshmen representatives Tom Suozzi and Laura Gillen easily overcame primary challenges. Nancy Lacore secured the Democratic nomination for governor in the state's first congressional district.
