Senate Democrats are demanding that the Trump administration provide regular election security briefings, stating they have received only one such briefing from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. The lawmakers reported that requests for briefings from the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security's Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) were ignored.
In a letter, Democratic senators expressed concern over a "lack of coordination and information sharing between Executive Branch agencies or to ensure timely information dissemination to election stakeholders." Such briefings are typically provided to Congress regarding threats to critical infrastructure or foreign adversary attempts to influence election outcomes.
The senators also voiced concerns about the administration's reinvestigation of unsubstantiated claims that President Donald Trump won the 2020 presidential election. The report indicated that the Trump administration had previously reduced staff in key FBI and DHS offices responsible for election safeguarding.
