London Mayor Sadiq Khan has requested the Metropolitan Police investigate the "Great Israeli Real Estate Event" due to concerns that it includes properties located in illegal Israeli settlements. Khan stated that these settlements are "unjustifiable and illegal under international law" and condemned any attempts to market such properties in London or elsewhere.
During a session at the London Assembly, Khan responded to questions from Zack Polanski, a Member of the London Assembly, confirming his stance against the event. He indicated that his office has been in contact with the Metropolitan Police, the Foreign Office, and the Home Office regarding the matter. The Metropolitan Police are set to assess allegations of criminality associated with the event, with a view to a potential investigation.
Several legal organizations, including the International Centre of Justice for Palestinians, the European Legal Support Center, and the Public Interest Law Centre, have sent a joint letter to the Metropolitan Police. They are urging an investigation into potential criminal offenses stemming from the organization and promotion of the event, including whether financial flows related to it constitute criminal property. The UK government has previously advised businesses against engaging in economic and financial activities within illegal Israeli settlements, deeming them contrary to international law.
