Election protesters and sports officials are engaged in a tense standoff over access to a gymnasium in Seoul that is being used as a ballot-counting center. The Korean Sport & Olympic Committee is demanding government intervention as protesters continue to block access to sports federation offices housed within the Olympic Park Handball Gymnasium.
The blockade, which began on June 5, has prevented sports organizations from accessing their offices for 12 consecutive days. The protesters are demanding a rerun of the June 3 local elections, citing ballot shortages at 26 voting stations across the nation as evidence of irregularities.
During the standoff, an attempt to form a monitoring team comprising police officers and sports organization staff failed due to opposition from other protesters. Police have issued multiple warnings to the demonstrators, cautioning them about potential criminal punishment for obstructing business.
