Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has inaugurated six National Highway projects in Meghalaya, representing a significant boost to the state's infrastructure and regional connectivity. The cumulative investment for these projects, which include four new highway constructions and the upgradation of two existing National Highways, amounts to Rs 3,214 crore.
These initiatives are expected to enhance mobility, reduce travel times, improve logistics efficiency, and stimulate growth in tourism, investment, and employment across Meghalaya and the wider Northeast region. Gadkari highlighted that Meghalaya is currently experiencing substantial infrastructure development, with total investments exceeding Rs 52,400 crore. He noted that projects worth Rs 6,200 crore have been completed, Rs 6,400 crore are underway, and approximately Rs 40,000 crore are in various stages of planning and execution.
Gadkari emphasized the transformative impact of these road projects, stating they are crucial for the future development and employment generation for the local population. He reiterated the government's commitment to supporting Meghalaya's growth aspirations through world-class infrastructure. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma acknowledged the significant infrastructure development in the state over the past twelve years, with projects totaling over Rs 50,000 crore, which have demonstrably improved connectivity and economic growth.
The specific projects include the Pynursla Bypass (7.76 km, Rs 564 crore), the Dhubri-Phulbari Bridge to Selsella stretch (31.5 km, Rs 737 crore), the Tura Bypass (29 km, Rs 951 crore), and the Selsella-Goeragre road project (31.7 km, Rs 504 crore). Additionally, upgrades to the Shillong-Dawki Road (10.67 km, Rs 351 crore) and the Jowai Bypass (5.44 km, Rs 106 crore) were also part of the announcement. These projects are anticipated to strengthen Meghalaya's transportation network, facilitate economic activity, and foster greater regional integration.
