Starting July 1, 2026, eligible Medicare beneficiaries will gain access to certain GLP-1 medications for weight loss at a subsidized cost of $50 per month. This initiative, known as the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, is a time-limited demonstration program by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) designed to run through December 31, 2027. The program aims to address the high cost of these innovative treatments, making them more accessible to seniors managing obesity and related health conditions.
CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz stated that the program aims to change the current situation where many seniors cannot afford these medications due to their high cost. Chris Klomp, Director of Medicare and Chief Counselor at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, added that the demonstration is intended to simplify and standardize access to GLP-1s across the Medicare program, thereby improving quality of life and healthcare value.
The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge operates under the Secretary's authority to test new care delivery approaches within Medicare. CMS will manage centralized processes for claims adjudication and pharmacy payments. Beneficiaries are encouraged to consult with their doctors to determine if a GLP-1 medication is appropriate for their health needs. CMS will provide further information to beneficiaries as the program's launch approaches.
