Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has formally requested Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar to expedite approvals for a suite of infrastructure and mobility projects in Bengaluru, collectively valued at Rs 13,549 crore. These initiatives are being proposed for support under the Centre's Urban Challenge Fund (UCF) and are deemed critical for alleviating the city's severe traffic congestion and improving urban mobility.
In a letter submitted to the Union Minister, Shivakumar highlighted that the proposed projects are eligible for UCF support and emphasized the state government's commitment to prioritizing their implementation. The request includes proposals for a double-decker corridor as part of Namma Metro Phase-3, revised cost estimates for Metro Phase-2, and the development of Metro Phase-3A. Additionally, the state seeks approval for a Regional Rapid Rail Transit System (RRTS) to connect Bengaluru with surrounding cities like Mysuru, Kanakapura, Tumakuru, Chikkaballapura, and Kolar.
The proposed Metro Phase-3 double-decker corridor, spanning 37.12 km, is estimated to cost Rs 9,700 crore and involves a road flyover at the lower level and a metro viaduct above. This revised design requires further clearance as it deviates from the alignment originally approved by the Centre. For Metro Phase-2, the government is seeking approval for a revised cost of Rs 40,425 crore, a significant increase from the initial Rs 26,405 crore, due to cost escalations and additional land acquisition expenses.
Metro Phase-3A, a 37.8-km corridor connecting Sarjapura and Hebbal with both underground and elevated sections, is estimated at Rs 25,999 crore. The Detailed Project Report for this phase was resubmitted in April 2026. The RRTS project aims to enhance regional connectivity, reduce pressure on Bengaluru's road network, and support long-term economic growth.
