The Union Cabinet has approved Phase 2(A) of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project, a 6.032-kilometer extension to the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, at a cost of Rs 2,169.04 crore. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the approval, stating the project aims to enhance urban mobility and connect the Sardar Patel Sports Enclave, being built for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with the airport. The new corridor will feature four elevated and one underground station and is expected to be completed within four years. Upon completion, Ahmedabad will have a 77.63 km metro network. The project is anticipated to create approximately 2,000 jobs during peak construction and 500 during operation and maintenance. The Cabinet also approved other projects totaling Rs 4,703 crore.
