Egyptian Doctor Charged With Spreading False News After Highlighting Hospital Abuses

She also detailed a case where a pregnant woman was allegedly denied care due to her attire and smoking, and another where a six-month pregnant woman with visible assault injuries was reportedly refused treatment without a marriage certificate.

Swedan had edited her post to clarify her intention was to highlight working conditions and medical practices, advocating for the safety of women and patients. Following her arrest, discussions about obstetric violence intensified on social media, with many women sharing similar experiences.

Egyptian human rights groups, such as the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights, condemned Swedan's arrest, with Lobna Darwish stating that such issues are not unique to El Shatby Hospital and that the state often treats public concerns as security matters. Alexandria University Hospitals released a statement affirming their commitment to patient dignity and professional ethics, promising to investigate any substantiated complaints.
