Comedian Carlos Mencia was arrested and charged with 12 felony counts for allegedly failing to report or pay taxes on more than $8 million in earnings between 2019 and 2024. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced the charges, calling Mencia "one of California’s biggest tax scofflaws."
Mencia faces six felony counts of failure to file personal income tax with the intent to evade taxes, one for each year from 2019 to 2024, and six similar counts for corporate taxes. Prosecutors stated he owes more than $300,000 in state taxes on income totaling $8.7 million. Mencia has not yet entered a plea, and his attorney did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Authorities arrested the 58-year-old stand-up comic at his Los Angeles home on Thursday morning. He was being held on $250,000 bail and is expected to make his first court appearance on Monday. If convicted of all counts, Mencia could face over 11 years in prison, in addition to paying the back taxes and interest, which would nearly double the total amount owed.
These charges mark the first filed under the district attorney's new Business Tax Fraud Unit, established in May. Hochman noted that Mencia had regularly paid taxes before 2019 and had not responded to 78 notices from the state regarding his delinquent bills. The current charges pertain only to state taxes, with the IRS not having informed the DA's office of Mencia's federal tax status.
Mencia, born Ned Arnel Holness in Honduras, began his stand-up career in the late 1980s and rose to prominence in the early 2000s. He starred in the Comedy Central series "Mind of Mencia" from 2005 to 2008. His career later faced accusations of joke theft, which he denied. Despite these controversies, he continues to perform regular stand-up shows.
