News24 host Sharri Markson reveals heavily redacted Treasury advice showing the Albanese Government was warned its controversial tax changes could increase rents and reduce housing supply. “The Albanese Government was warned that its controversial tax changes would put downward pressure on house prices, increase rents and reduce housing supply,” Ms Markson said. “This heavily redacted document released under Freedom of Information laws, reveals the true advice the Albanese Government was given about the impact of its tax changes on the housing market. “They knew it was going to increase rents and reduce housing supply. But Treasury underestimated how deep the impact would be on supply, rents and the fall in house prices. “House prices are lower. Housing supply is lower. Fewer young buyers are getting into the market and rents have gone up. It's an own goal if I ever saw one.”
