GOP’s message: Trump wants voters to ‘treat it as if he’s on the ballot’

Former White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney says the reason US President Donald Trump is ‘out stumping all across the country’ is that he wants voters to treat the upcoming midterms as a presidential election. “What you’re hearing is Donald Trump essentially saying ‘please, I know I’m not literally on the ballot but please treat it as if I am on the ballot...’ that’s really the Republicans’ best argument right now,” Mr Mulvaney told News24 Digital Presenter Gabriella Power. “They don’t know how to message the war … they don’t want to message inflation because the numbers are not very good. “They do have some successes on immigration and crime … so they could talk about that, but generally speaking they just want to make sure that their base, their regular Republican voters, show up to vote.”
